Pantry Challenge - January 2nd Shopping

This morning I got up early and headed to Hy-Vee for their one day sale.  I purchased the following:  5 cans of shaving creme @ 88 cents; 5 - 8 oz. packages shredded mozzarella @ $1.00; 2 - half gallons of milk @ 88 cents and 5.89 lbs. of bananas @ 29 cents. The shaving creme was on sale at a price that only comes twice a year.  Also I looked in my freezer this morning and I did have a few packages of cheese in there.  So 5 pkgs. of the cheese was all I needed.  My total with tax came to $13.18.

From Hy-Vee I stopped at Fareway (a mere two blocks away) and picked up 1 Dole Romaine Salad mix for 69 cents as it was expiring today and 1 box of their store brand Raisin Bran cereal for $2.19.  My total was $2.88.

I had only spent a total of $16.06 for the upcoming week.  I felt pretty good about my purchases until my DH came home from his run and told me he needed Gatorade.  Darn!  My stockpile from the summer was gone!!

Now I know there are recipes online for "homemade gatorade" but it just isn't the same as the real thing.  Since my husband is a die hard runner, he needs gatorade to rehydrate and replenish his body after a hard run.  It is a definite need.  I was able to purchase a 51 oz. can of gatorade powder at Wal-mart for $8.98 with tax.  It makes 6 gallons and should last the month but if it doesn't, we will head out for more.  Gatorade to a runner is like milk to a child.

My final total for the day came to $25.04.  I'm still pretty happy with this.

One more comment about my DH, he will eat anything I prepare and he never criticizes me.  He is a tremendous support to me (and I am not talking financial).  We laugh a lot in our household and we tease each other a lot.  We are a team and I love him more and more each day.

I was checking out the groceries on Amazon (they have nice sales!) and I'm not sure if you have a particular flavor you buy, but they have a Gatorade powder pack for $79 (with subscribe and save) that brings it down to 11-12 cents an ounce. I'm not sure on your tax rate, but WalMart Gatorade is closer to 18-19 cents an ounce. It's a lot more to buy and it is certain flavors, but the price is nice :)

I use S&S quite a bit, and you can cancel it after the first order if you want and it still gets you the S&S price.

Anyhow, if you are interested, here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Gatorade-Variety-Lemon-lime-Riptide-21-Ounce/dp/B000VK1MG0/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1262479428&sr=1-15

I will definitely check it out. During the summer I can get Gatorade or Powerade on sale for as low as 50 cents for a 32 oz. bottle. I stocked up and that supply got me through to January which is pretty good.

The Very most important factor in your path to frugality is having a tremendous support system in place, at least that's what I have come to find! It's great that you are starting the year off by not kicking yourself in the butt! I'm quite proud of you, my friend!

I have come a long way in these past few months. I am no longer setting myself up for failure with lofty (too frugal and deprived) goals.
