Time to get back to the basics - Price Book

I just got done looking at the grocery ads for this week and I only circled one thing that appeared to be a good deal - Bartlett pears on sale for 88 cents a lb.  Maybe there are more deals but with prices having risen so quickly I am struggling to figure out what is a good price anymore.

I haven't had to keep a price book for quite some time because I knew the prices of everything I purchased.  Now that prices have dramatically changed, I am making up a new price book.  This is so frustrating.

The past month or so I have been kind of going on a whim and a prayer when it came to buying some of our groceries.  There were the obvious deals such as 4 boxes of Cheerios for $5.00; but there were the other items that I wasn't so sure about.

So now I'm getting back to the basics and keeping a price book.  I need the information in order to make wise purchase choices but I also know that it will be kind of sad.  Why?  Comparing today's prices to the prices in my old price book is sad.   Actually it's even worse if I go back to the very first price book I ever kept from 18 years ago.  I came across it recently and under beef I had chuck roast listed as $1.49 a lb.  Now that's really sad.

I've never really made a price book, for some reason I can remember how much things cost - but I can't remember what I cooked yesterday or my neighbors name :)

Yes, prices have sure changed in 18 years. ugh!

I know what you mean about the price increases. Last month I overspent stocking up on meat that was at crazy low prices due to the drought knowing that everything else will skyrocket. I don't know how folks on a fixed budget are making it :(

I think I may purchase a small note book to do this also. I can't keep up with the constant increase in everything either :(

I can sympathize with you when it comes to the frustration of the 'new' prices. I'm still stuck back at meat being under $2 a pound. I guess the 'new' norm for meat is under $3 a pound for beef.

Will you be posting a picture or explanation of how you make your price book? I made one a few years ago but didn't use it much.

Inflation, drought, etc. Whatever the cause prices are going up although we still spend way less in terms of percentage of income on food than people in many other Western countries. Not a comfort I know LOL. A new updated price book sounds like a great solution.

Hi, I am doing the same. For years and years I no longer needed my price book because my stock-up price never changed. Not so now. Peanut butter in 18 oz jars WAS $.99- yesterday I was "excited" to find it for $1.99. Ugh! Good luck- it is depressing and eye-opening. Many prices are 100% up. Who got a 100% raise last year? Umm, no one. Angela

@Living on Less Money,

Yes, I will post how I plan on doing my updated price list and you won't have to wait long for it. I'm working on it now.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you do your price book. I've tried a few times, but just get overwhelmed by it. I don't comment often because I'm usually reading your blog on my Kindle, but I do appreciate your posts and have learned a lot!

I've always been blessed with a weird memory thing that allowed me to buy groceries wherever I was because I knew the prices (numbers stick, faces, names, etc not so much)...Only now I am frozen when I go to the grocery because I can't get those OLD numbers out of my head!

And I've cut cut cut (about 40%) of my grocery list but the budget amount has had to rise by 10%. It feels like a no win but I keep plugging along.
